Ram fans will have safer, more accessible bleachers at Linduska Field for the coming football season.
A good-sized crew from Boland Recreation of Marshalltown spent two weeks installing 15-row, 166-foot elevated aluminum bleachers on the “home” side of the field. The bleachers are accessible at either end via ramps with handrails, and there are cut-outs in the bleachers for wheelchairs. The bleachers also have an access point in the center.
Cost of the new bleachers was $149,750, with the school paying an additional $11,750 to move the bleachers on the north end of the home side, the “student section,” to the east “visitor” side. The project is funded with physical plant and equipment levy (PPEL) revenues.
New sidewalks were also constructed this summer from the parking lot at the north end of the field to the concession stand and the bleachers. The sidewalks will make it easier for people using wheelchairs or walkers, or with other physical challenges, to get to the bleachers.
Folks who have been around for a while may remember that the football field was in the 500 block of S. Elm St on the east side of the road, between South St and Park St, in the 1940s. The field was moved to E. Russell St where Greene County elementary school is now located. The bleachers that were taken down last month were new at the Russell St field, and then eventually moved to the current field east of the high school.
